Contrary to optimists’ aspirations, America has neither “wobbled back” nor had any epiphanies.
A year after one of the darkest periods in US history, the country is facing the worst inflation in 40 years, more US deaths from COVID-19 than the Trump administration, and the prospect of the largest European land war since WWII has made a dent in the stability of the United States.
Nikki Haley, a former United Nations ambassador, stated that President Joe Biden and his Democratic colleagues jeopardize America’s future by “undermining the home basis of our global leadership.”
On Monday, in a Fox News opinion essay, Haley said that Biden’s $5.8 trillion budget and the recent $1.5 trillion earmark-filled spending package “convey the message that America is unconcerned about fiscal prudence and economic strength necessary for our national defense.”
“There is never an appropriate moment to transmit that message. However, the worst moment is now, as Russia invades Ukraine and threatens nuclear war, and China seeks global dominance,” Haley said. “Rather than preparing to protect our liberties and essential interests, President Biden and Congress are weakening the home basis for our global leadership. Their failure imperils our future.”
Biden’s proposed budget “hikes federal spending by a third compared to pre-pandemic levels, doubling down on the debt and deficits that are destroying the opportunity for our children and grandchildren,” according to Haley, the former governor of South Carolina.
“The $2.5 trillion in tax hikes that will undermine our economy for generations to come,” she added, per the Hill.
She was particularly critical of the latest budget bill’s more than 4,000 earmarks.
According to Fox News, “They are the lubricant to Washington’s spending wheel, spinning faster than ever. Overspending affects both Democrats and Republicans equally.”
“Earmarks encourage Republicans and Democrats to accept Joe Biden’s budget increases because, well, at least they’re getting something.”
The earmarks provide both parties “reason to put personal ambitions before America’s security demands,” she said. She wrote that despite the national debt being at more than $30 trillion and set to climb by at least a trillion dollars a year without end.
Haley said that a rise in government expenditure is not a prescription for success, let alone survival.
“Not when Russia is assaulting Europe, and China is advancing on all fronts,” she said in her Fox News column. There will be less money for the military, which requires considerable investment than Biden proposed to contain and deter Russia, China, Iran, and the DPRK. Moreover, the economic impact of a growing deficit is devastatingly enormous.
As part of her plan to jump-start the economy, Haley argued for the return of both budgetary prudence and free-market capitalism.
The former ambassador wrote: “That starts by getting government out of the way of job-seekers and entrepreneurs through top-to-bottom regulatory and tax reform. It also means tapping America’s incredible energy resources. We should drill our oil before buying a drop from Russia, Iran, Venezuela, or any other enemy, unlike President Biden’s approach. A country that wants to defend itself doesn’t pay regimes that want to destroy it.”
Trade with China in sophisticated technology and dependency on China for critical commodities like medicine must stop, Haley, who has been cited as a prospective contender for the 2024 national ticket, stated.
Forging better agreements with the United Kingdom, Taiwan, India, Japan, and other freedom-loving countries should re-energize trade with our friends, she said. Keep encouraging governments that seek to enslave the world if you don’t want to destroy freedom.” Trade with each other; we don’t need what they have to offer.”
Protests against the Biden administration remain as their poor performance as of the late makes Americans anxious for the future. President Biden’s approval ratings are indistinguishable from Former President Trump’s at the same stage in his term, having started with most Americans approving of his performance. At this point, President Biden is facing an extremely high probability that his Democratic Party will lose control of both chambers of Congress in the November 2022 midterms.
