Republicans are upset about a ruling in Alabama that makes it harder to get in vitro fertilization (IVF). They are speaking out about their worries.
This week, Republican Representative Nancy Mace was traveling with Trump. She said, “We need to talk about making sure we don’t take away the rights of women who are childbearing age and want to have children to IVF.”
“I’ll work very hard to make sure that doesn’t happen,” Mace said.
A big push for the Democratic Party is abortion rights as a main topic that could motivate voters and help them win. But many people on both parts of the political spectrum are unhappy with Alabama’s decision.
Alabama’s new law says that the state will treat frozen embryos like children. If any harm or problems happen, this could mean that hospitals and families could be charged with a crime. Some clinics stopped IVF treatments right away after the decision while they thought about what it might mean for them.
In his speech, President Joe Biden said that this decision was “directly a result of overturning Roe v. Wade.” At the same time, Kamala Harris, the Vice President, spoke out against the decision as part of her “Fight for Reproductive Freedoms.”
“On the one hand, the proponents are saying that a person doesn’t have the right to end an unwanted pregnancy and, on the other hand, the proponents are saying that a person doesn’t have the right to start a family,” Harris said.
But Trump hasn’t said anything about the decision, and he’s been seen as not caring about what’s going on. He has said in the past that he would not rule in favor of a ban on abortion because most people would not agree with that decision.
As for Trump’s main opponent Nikki Haley, she spoke out and said, “Embryos are babies to me.” For starters, you need to make sure that babies are cared for and protected the right way. Two, you want to make sure that parents can talk to their doctor about these choices as they plan what they’re going to do.
