Several Hospitalize After Running In Brooklyn Half Marathon

Several were hospitalized while one runner died after collapsing at the finish line of the annual Half Marathon in Brooklyn on Saturday.

According to the authorities, the 32-year old runner was reportedly crossing the finish line when he collapsed. 

The man was later identified as David Reichman of Manhattan, a behavioral therapist who got his master’s degree in social work from New York University.

According to his Linked In profile, he was the founder of Field Trip Health, a mental health and psychotherapy company in Kips Bay.

“I approach psychotherapy with seriousness and humor. I’ll listen, offer direction, and challenge you to be the best version of yourself.” Reichman stated on his profile on Psychology Today. 

However, the cause of death for the runner was not immediately known. However, a spokesperson from said that the runner possibly suffered cardiac arrest.

In the statement released by FDNY spokesperson Frank Dwyer, he revealed that the man was immediately transported to a nearby hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Dwyer also revealed that there were at least six other runners who were transported to a hospital and are currently in undisclosed condition.

While the causes of casualties have not been identified, authorities blamed the brutal weather conditions during the marathon. 

In a report released by Fox Weather, 20-30 degrees above average temperatures were reportedly expected to hit the East Coast, striking across the areas seeing highs in the 90s from the mid-Atlantic and Ohio Valley into the Northeast and New England. 

Following the report, the National Weather Service of New York reportedly issued a heat advisory for parts of the region as the temperatures were seen rising into the 80s and 90s. 

Furthermore, the air quality alert was also in effect for much of the area until around 11 p.m. E.T.

“Dense fog advisories remain in effect this morning for all locations through at least 9am. Once the fog dissipates, temps will warm into the 80s and 90s. As a result, a heat advisory is in effect for parts of our area.” The NWSN New York tweeted. 

Meanwhile, the marathon began in Prospect Park and ended at the Coney Island boardwalk with more than  22,000 runners gathered in Brooklyn for the 13.1-mile race. 

Reports revealed that this year was the first time in three years that the annual event has reached full capacity.
