A prominent left-wing activist, Ryan Carson, tragically lost his life in a seemingly random street attack. Carson, aged 32, and his girlfriend were returning from a wedding when they encountered a teenager, and this encounter quickly escalated, resulting in Carson’s fatal stabbing on the sidewalk.
Ryan Carson was well-known as a social justice advocate. He relocated to New York from Boston in 2010 to attend the Pratt Institute and later became involved with the New York Public Interest Research Group (NYPIRG), a liberal political campaign organization that championed causes such as homelessness, green energy, and voting rights.
Within NYPIRG, Carson focused on green issues and held the role of a senior solid waste campaign manager.
Additionally, he was described by friends as someone committed to challenging profit-centered lifestyles. Alongside his activism, Carson was a poet, with one of his poems ironically revolving around his own fear of death.
The tragic incident occurred on the night of October 2 when Carson and his girlfriend, Claudia Morales, attended a wedding in Long Island.
Around 4 a.m. the following morning, while sitting on a bench in the Bedford-Stuyvesant district, they encountered a young man in a black sweatshirt.
Surveillance footage captured the couple standing up and heading in the same direction as this individual.
Suddenly, the man began kicking parked scooters and aggressively confronted Carson and asked, “What the f**k are you looking at?”
Carson responded that he wasn’t looking at anything and positioned himself in front of Morales as the aggressor advanced.
As the situation escalated, the attacker, later identified as an 18-year-old individual with a history of mental disturbances and criminal behavior named Bryan Dowling, launched a violent assault on Carson.
Morales stepped aside and watched in horror as her boyfriend attempted to escape the assailant but tripped over the bench where they had been seated. Before Carson could regain his footing, Dowling repeatedly stabbed him in the chest, ultimately piercing his heart.
Afterward, Dowling moved away briefly, then returned to kick Carson’s lifeless body and spit at Morales. A woman approached and addressed Dowling by name, urging him not to harm Carson before apologizing to Morales and departing. Morales immediately called 911, but Carson’s injuries proved fatal.
Law enforcement initiated a search for the assailant. Initially, there was no description of the attacker, leading to speculation that Morales, a Black Lives Matter activist who used the anti-police slogan ACAB on social media, hadn’t provided one.
However, Bryan Dowling was identified from surveillance footage and subsequently arrested on October 5. Despite Morales not positively identifying him in a lineup, Dowling was charged with second-degree murder.
In response to Carson’s tragic death, his friends have initiated a GoFundMe campaign with the goal of raising $20,000 to allow them time off work to cope with their loss.
