Target just said that they will be lowering the prices of about 5,000 things in their stores. These include diapers, coffee, bread, and thousands of other common items. Along with other stores, they are trying to get their business going again by dropping the process to a more reasonable price for people who are having a hard time with inflation.
General Manager Rick Gomez says that Target is lowering prices because “consumers are feeling pressured to make the most of their budget.” Target has already lowered the prices of more than 1,000 items, but they plan to lower the prices of even more in the next few weeks. They hope to lower the prices of over 5,000 items.
They will soon share their earnings for the first quarter, but they expect their sales to be lower than they were last year. This will be their first drop in sales in seven years.
Even though inflation is still high and the U.S. economy is slowing down, people are still spending a lot of money, which has made businesses act. It’s important for stores and companies to adapt to the fact that Americans are becoming much more frugal. The amount that households spent each month dropped by almost 5%. This means that people aren’t buying as much as they used to.
Target’s chief growth officer, Christina Hennington, said, “There are some positive signs in the economy, but there are also persistent pressures on families and retailers.” She said, “Consumers say they still feel stretched, they’re balancing a lot and having to make trade-offs to meet the needs of their families while sprinkling in the occasional luxury.”
We’ve seen prices drop at stores other than Target, like Giant Food and Michaels.
