The UK ends trade talks with Canada

People from Canada and the UK have been talking about trade issues while they try to get the UK to lift their ban on hormone-treated beef.

The main rules for trade between the UK and Canada have been in place since the UK joined the EU. Finally, the UK has stopped negotiating with Canada because they know that the talks will be better for Canada than for the UK.

This is what the UK government said: “We only negotiate deals that deliver for the British people.” They also said that they should be able to “pause negotiations where progress is not being made.” The British government did say, though, that they would be open to talking with Canada again in the future.

As trade talks between the two countries try to reach a deal that works for both, the import taxes have been a major source of worry. As a deal with Canada ends, the UK has been paying the bare minimum in import taxes. Like, the UK’s deal for important cheeses ended on December 31, 2023, and now they have to pay a 245% tax on all imports. In April, the same kind of deal for cars will end.

Since 2022, the two countries have talked about starting talks. Someone who works for Canada’s trade minister spoke out and said, “The UK is a long-term trading partner, and I am confident that we can negotiate an agreement that is good for both of us.” To be clear, though, I want to say that we will not negotiate a deal that is bad for Canadians, including our businesses, farmers, and workers.

A lot of experts say that this choice could help a lot of farmers in the UK. Concerns have been raised on both sides, and the countries are continuing to negotiate but have stopped until they can reach a deal that works for everyone.
