The UN Court says that Israel MUST stop the killing in Gaza

Many talks have taken place about a possible cease-fire and Israel’s possible decision to be less violent in Gaza. Israel was recently told by the UN’s top court to do everything it can to stop the killing in Gaza. However, many people say this is not the same as a cease-fire.

This order comes at a time when Israel is still bombing Gaza as part of a military operation that has killed over 20,000 people so far. More talks have been held about a possible cease-fire, which would hopefully allow the trade of prisoners and hostages and end the killing.

The court also told Israel that they need to report in one month about what they are doing to stop a killing in Gaza. The statement said, “To meet its obligations under the genocide convention, Israel must do everything in its power to stop acts under Article 2 of the convention that affect Palestinians in Gaza.”

The statement then said what Israel should not do, including “a) killing members of the group, b) seriously hurting members of the group physically or mentally, c) putting the group through conditions of life that will destroy it physically in whole or in part, and d) putting in place measures meant to stop births within the group.”

Some people in Israel have tried to get the ruling thrown out, but the courts have said that they will not do that. The South African government brought this case to the world court, which said that Israel was killing Palestinians in a way that was similar to murder.

The court also said they were worried about the Israeli hostages who were taken during the attack on October 7. They ruled that these hostages be freed right away.

Benjamin Netanyahu, the prime minister of Israel, recently reacted to the court’s decision by saying, “The charge of genocide leveled against Israel is not only false, but it also’s outrageous, and decent people everywhere should reject it.”

Then Netanyahu made it clear what Israel’s role and responsibility are. He said, “Our war is with Hamas terrorists, not against Palestinians.”Even though Hamas uses citizens as human shields, we will continue to help with humanitarian aid and do everything we can to keep civilians out of harm’s way. We are still going to do what we need to do to protect our country and our people.
