Three people got HIV from “vampire facials” at an unlicensed spa

A “vampire facial” at a spa has been suggested as an option to a facelift. The procedure is said to not be invasive in any way. But if the process is done in a dirty room, it could be very bad for the people getting the facial’s health.

Three women in New Mexico who got a “vampire facial” got HIV from the spa that wasn’t approved. People who get this facial will have their blood pulled from their arm and then microneedles will be used to apply the blood to their face. It’s also known as platelet-rich plasma, and it’s said to help reduce the size of pores and make the skin look younger.

“This investigation is the first to associate HIV transmission with nonsterile cosmetic injection services,” it said.

Officials in charge of health saw the facility after two women tested positive for HIV when they got back from trips in 2018. The third person didn’t find out she had HIV until a year ago, when she went to the hospital for an AIDS-related disease.

The CDC did not say what the name of the unregulated spa was, but they did shut it down because it was doing things that could spread diseases that are spread through blood. The CDC looked into problems and found that some things were not labeled, like blood tubes that were kept with food in the fridge.

Maria Ramos de Ruiz, who used to own the VIP club, pleaded guilty to five counts of lying on her license.

When going to a spa for any kind of cosmetic treatment or process, especially cosmetic injections, people should ask if the staff is licensed and trained. They should also ask for proof.
