Trump is Coming Back to Facebook

Former President Donald Trump returns to Facebook and Instagram.

According to the president of global affairs of META, the company that owns Facebook and Instagram, Trump’s accounts will be restored “in the coming weeks” and will have “new protective measures to prevent offenses”.

NBC News reports:

Those safeguards will include “heavier penalties for repeat offenders, penalties that will apply to other public figures whose accounts are reinstated from civil disorder-related suspensions under our updated protocol. If Mr. Trump posts further infringing content, the content will be removed and suspended for between one month and two years, depending on the severity of the violation,” Clegg said on the company’s website.

A Trump spokesperson did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

The move comes weeks after Facebook gave itself a deadline to reevaluate its 2021 decision, and weeks after Republicans, many of whom have criticized Facebook’s decision, regained control of the House of Representatives.

Then-House Minority Leader, and now Speaker of the House, Kevin McCarthy vowed to “check Big Tech’s power over our speech” after Facebook announced the length of Trump’s suspension in 2021.

The news comes just a week after another report said Trump was preparing to return to Twitter.

There may be difficulties making it work now, but now, according to a new report from NBC News, it looks like Trump may finally be back on Twitter and Facebook.

Returning to the White House, Donald Trump tries to regain control of his powerful social media accounts.

With access to his Twitter account, the Trump campaign is formally asking Facebook’s parent company to unblock his account thereafter it was blocked in response to the riots at the US Capitol two years ago.

“We believe that the ban on President Trump’s Facebook account has dramatically distorted and inhibited public discourse,” the Trump campaign wrote Tuesday in its letter to Meta, according to a copy reviewed by NBC News.

A Republican, speaking to NBC on the matter, said: “Trump will likely return to Twitter. It’s just a matter of how and when. He’s been talking about it for weeks, but Trump speaks for Trump, so anyone can guess what he’s going to do or say or when.”

Also, according to NBC, he’s already writing his first tweet. “Another Trump confidante who declined to be named when discussing conversations with him said Trump had been searching Twitter for weeks about the comeback and that his campaign advisers had also been working on ideas for his first tweet,” he said. NBC.

One of the major obstacles to Trump’s return to the platform is likely his contract with Truth Social, which requires him to first post anything he posts on Twitter or Facebook to Truth Social, 6 hours in advance.

That contractual obligation keeps Truth Social alive, as it is the first place people should go if they want to see what Trump is thinking and saying.
