Former President Donald Trump revealed on Tuesday that he voted for Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis in the state’s gubernatorial race, after the president took a swipe at the governor last week.
When asked by a reporter if he voted for DeSantis, Trump replied: “Yes, I did.”
The ex-president previously took a jab at DeSantis while speaking at a rally in Latrobe, Pennsylvania, on Saturday, during which he called the Florida governor “Ron DeSanctimonious.”
“We’re winning big in the Republican Party for the nomination like nobody’s ever seen before,” Trump said. “Trump at 71%, Ron DeSanctimonious at 10%”
“Mike Pence at 7, oh, Mike is doing better than I thought,” he continued. “Liz Cheney there’s no way she’s at 4%. There’s no way. There’s no way. But we’re at 71 to 10 to 7 to 4.”
Reports have circulated about possible growing tensions between Trump and DeSantis, as the two are widely considered for the Republican presidential nomination in 2024. DeSantis, however, dismissed rumors of rifts between the two camps.
“He wants to see Republicans doing well,” the governor told Fox News in February. “And I think when the media is trying to act like he’s upset at me for doing well, I think that’s total bunk. I think they’re just making it up.”
This comes as Trump is rumored to announce his presidential campaign next week, following months of speculation.
“I think Tuesday will be a very exciting day for a lot of people and I look forward to seeing you at Mar-a-Lago,” he told reporters.
On Thursday, Trump told a rally crowd in Sioux City, Iowa, that he “will very, very, very probably do it again.”
“In order to make our country successful and safe and glorious, I will very, very, very, probably do it again,” he said as the crowd cheered. “That’s all I’m telling you — very soon. Get ready.”
During a July interview with New York Magazine, Trump said that he feels “very confident” about his chances of being re-elected, saying: “If I decide to run, I’ll win.”
Trump still holds a plurality of support among Republican voters. A recent NYT/Siena survey found that nearly 50 percent of Republican voters said they want him to run in 2024, while 25 percent named DeSantis.
