U.S. Military Strikes Iran-Linked Sites

The United States military conducted a series of retaliatory strikes on locations associated with Iran and affiliated militant groups.

These strikes were in response to attacks by Iran-linked groups on American military bases in the Middle East.

Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin described them as “self-defense strikes” in response to ongoing attacks against U.S. personnel in Iraq and Syria by Iranian-backed militia groups.

“These precision self-defense strikes are a response to a series of ongoing and mostly unsuccessful attacks against U.S. personnel in Iraq and Syria by Iranian-backed militia groups that began on October 17,” he said in a statement.

The U.S. targeted a weapons and ammunition storage area in eastern Syria, which was allegedly used by the Iranian Revolutionary Guard to support allied militia groups.

Austin emphasized that the U.S. prioritizes the safety of its personnel and interests, while expressing a desire to avoid conflict.

“The President has no higher priority than the safety of U.S. personnel, and he directed today’s action to make clear that the United States will not tolerate such attacks and will defend itself, its personnel, and its interests,” Austin said.

However, he warned that if such attacks continued, the U.S. would take further necessary measures to protect its people.

Meanwhile, Iranian-supported forces continued to launch attacks against U.S. forces in the region, leading to casualties among American personnel.

This included an attack on U.S. forces in northern Iraq, resulting in the death of one American contractor due to cardiac arrest and minor injuries to 21 others.

“Iran wants to hide its hand and deny its role in these attacks against our forces. We will not let them. If attacks by Iran’s proxies against U.S. forces continue, we will not hesitate to take further necessary measures to protect our people,” Austin said.

These developments followed the U.S. supporting Israel in its conflict with Hamas militants in Gaza, which began after a Hamas terrorist attack led to civilian casualties in Israel.

“Our missiles, drones, and special forces are ready to direct qualitative strikes at the American enemy in its bases and disrupt its interests if it intervenes in this battle,” Ahmad “Abu Hussein” al-Hamidawi, head of the Iraqi Kataib Hezbollah militia, said in a statement.
