As Vice President Kamala Harris warned Russia on Saturday, there would be “swift and severe” repercussions for any violation of Ukrainian sovereignty.
Harris underlined US and NATO efforts to deescalate the crisis and discourage Moscow from invading Kyiv while speaking from the Munich Security Conference in Germany.
As for Russia’s diplomatic statements, Vice President Harris said their words don’t match what is happening.

In the past, the Kremlin has said that it has no plans to invade Ukraine, and last week, Russian President Vladimir Putin claimed that Russian forces were being withdrawn near the border.
Not only is Russia not removing its forces, but it is also preparing to launch an aggressive strike, according to US security sources.
Harris informed Ambassador Wolfgang Ischinger, Chairman of the Munich Security Conference, “I can say with absolute certainty: If Russia further invades Ukraine, the United States, together with our allies and partners, will impose high and unprecedented economic costs. “
She continued, “We will impose far-reaching financial sanctions and export controls. We will target Russia’s financial institutions and key industries. And we will target those who are complicit and those who aid and abet this unprovoked invasion.”
“Make no mistake. The imposition of these sweeping and coordinated measures will inflict great damage on those who must be held accountable,” the vice president said.
Harris discussed how Russia’s efforts to undermine NATO via membership conditions and security demands had strengthened the alliance.
She said, “We didn’t all start the same place but through diplomacy and again, speaks to the strength of diplomacy, we came together and are now speaking the unified voice.” Harris added, “History has challenged us over the years in that regard.”
“I think history will show that at this moment, we’re standing strong,” the vice president continued.
According to a senior US defense official, Russian military forces are within striking distance of the Ukrainian border, as around 40% to 50% of Putin’s men have moved into assault positions.
Putin currently has 120-125 Battalion Tactical Groups stockpiled around Ukraine’s border, in addition to activated Special Forces. Kyiv is within range of rocket forces and ballistic missile units.
