What is the $54 billion aid package for Ukraine?

European Union countries have decided to give $54 billion in aid to Ukraine. EU is made up of 27 countries.

“We have a deal,” said Charles Michel, President of the European Council. The same thing. Within the EU budget, all 27 leaders agreed on an extra 50 billion euros to help Ukraine. This makes sure that Ukraine will always have steady, long-term, predictable income. In its backing for Ukraine, the EU is taking the lead and is responsible. We know what is at stake.

Hungary spoke out against this deal in December. This happened soon after Volodymyr Zelenskyy, the president of Ukraine, came to the US to ask for $61 billion in help for his country. People said they stopped the help because they wanted to stick to a plan that let Hungary get the money it needed from the EU budget.

At the end of the day, the leaders agreed on both the package to Ukraine and Ukraine’s bid to join the EU. Hungary did agree to the terms of the deal. Hungary agreed to the agreement, but no one knows what kind of deal or reward was used to get them to do so. However, the agreement was reached by all 27 parties.

Ukraine needs help because it has been at war with Russia for almost three years. Russian officials thought the attack would end in a couple of weeks, but Ukraine’s resistance has made the war last much longer than they had planned.

Congress has been on the fence about whether to give Ukraine more help because their “much-promised counteroffensive” did not work.

On Thursday, Zelenskyy did mention the deal. He wrote on X, “Grateful to @CharlesMichel and EU leaders for setting up the €50 billion Ukraine Facility for 2024–2027.”

When all 27 leaders agree on something, it shows that the EU is very united, which is very important. “Long-term economic and financial stability will be improved by the EU’s continued financial aid to Ukraine. This is just as important as military aid and sanctions against Russia,” he said.
