What We Know About Claims That China Tried to Meddle in US Elections

Washington says they have seen proof that China is trying to affect the upcoming elections. The Secretary of State went to China and said that they saw proof that Beijing was trying to “influence and arguably interfere” with this year’s election.

Antony Blinken spoke out to repeat Joe Biden’s advice that the president of China should stay out of it, which Xi Jinping said they would not do. When asked if China was keeping their word, Blinken said, “We have seen, in general, evidence of attempts to influence and arguably interfere, and we want to make sure that’s cut off as soon as possible.”

“Any interference by China in our election is something we’re looking into very carefully and we won’t stand for,” he said.

There hasn’t been much from China in reaction to these accusations or the possible sanctions the US has said they will put on China because they help Russia. After meeting, Blinken said that the two countries’ relationship is looking good. He also talked about the work that the two countries are doing together in AI and other areas.

That being said, Blinken said that the major point of disagreement is that China backs Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

“China is the biggest source of machine tools, microelectronics, nitrocellulose (which is needed to make weapons), rocket fuel, and other items that can be used for more than one thing, which Moscow is using to build up its defense industry,” Blinken said.

“Without China’s help, Russia would find it hard to keep up its attack on Ukraine.”

Officials say that giving Russia more power is not only bad for Ukraine, but it’s also bad for Europe because it helps one of the biggest threats to Europe.
